Content Distribution for Media & Publishing - Yomuri Shimbun/ Fujitsu

Business Challenge - Yomiuri Shimbun desired a solution that would create added value for readers and advertisers by making the newspaper "interactive". In order to succeed, they needed a technology solution that would:

  • Extend, enhance, expand their brand.
  • Position them as a player in the interactive marketplace.
  • Reach new markets and build new markets.
  • Protect and repurpose legacy assets.
  • Protect and extend their current subscribers and advertisers.
  • Partner with technology experts with vision and appropriate assets.
  • Streamline client relationships using interactive technology.
  • Solution -When the 10 million readers of the world's largest newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun open their daily editions they have access to free software - printed in machine-readable code on a page of the newspaper. Fujitsu, under license from INTACTA has developed an application that encodes and prints virtually any software on plain newspaper. When the specially coded box of printed dots is scanned into a computer, using any standard scanner, the printed dots are translated back into computer programs. Virtually any software, including music files, high-resolution graphics or any executable computer application, can be delivered using the technology.

The application uses INTACTA patented encoding software called INTACTA.CODE™ to print encoded patterns of dots with a high degree of error correction, enabling the delivery of complete applications on such low-resolution and susceptible media as newsprint.

When newspaper readers scan the printed INTACTA.CODE™ newsprint into their computers, special software, working with standard scanners, decodes the print to the original application, music file or graphic. Fujitsu distributes the decoder software, free of charge, on the Internet for Japanese customers via its Web site.

Online Data Encoding for ASPs – Fujitsu

Business Challenge - From a technology perspective, media and entertainment companies are undergoing significant change most notably, managing the transition from analog to digital processes.  This presents the opportunity to bridge the transition of media content to core infrastructures to support this new environment.  Multimedia information stored on computers is expected to grow from 12% today to over 45% by the year 2003. Media organizations are investing in web-based workflow applications which address content creation, content management, rights management and content distribution.

The specific value chains to address are;

  • Content Management Value Chain
  • Advertising Management Value Chain
  • Subscription Management Value Chain
  • Solution – Fujitsu Limited, in conjunction with Nifty Inc. of Japan, has launched a site that enables customers to convert virtually any data into INTACTA.CODE™ by uploading the information to the Nifty ASP Internet site. The data is then converted into INTACTA.CODE™ and sent back to the ASP customer. Multimedia files, data files, virtually any computer file can be converted into INTACTA.CODE™; once converted, the code can be printed as a dense bar code, emailed securely or even sent over wireless devices.

Customers, once registered on the Fujitsu/Nifty site, can upload files for encoding. The encoded file is sent back to the customer for a fee; charges are determined by usage.

For example, a single, personal use fee gives individuals the ability to encode a personal voice greeting, which can be printed an unlimited number of times. Corporate use fees are based on a per-copy basis. Use in periodicals and other publications are also charged on a per-copy basis. The Fujitsu/Nifty site has more details on specific fees and corporate fee scales. Customers need Windows 98/ME/NT or 2000 and Internet Explorer 4.01, Netscape Navigator 4.1 or higher for use, and are required to register at the Nifty site.

Product Warranty Registrations – DataLode, Inc.

Business Challenge – Make it simple to gather valuable, relevant information about your customers, automating the processing of information on printed registration cards, and reduce the costs related to expensive data entry, printing, handling, and postage.

Solution -DataLode incorporates INTACTA.CODE™ into its RegBuilder™ and RealConnect™ registration systems. INTACTA technology provides a compressed code including key information that, when incorporated with DataLode’s registration systems, provides customers a means to more easily and reliably handle transactions. Hewlett Packard uses the DataLode INTACTA.CODE™ enabled system to enhance its customer registration process.

Via INTACTA.CODE™, DataLode offers clients a more efficient and effective way of creating and maintaining registration databases. INTACTA.CODE™ converts any form of data into an image containing binary code that once created is highly resistant to falsification or degradation. The image may be transmitted electronically or printed on paper which when processed, reconstitutes the original data with 100% accuracy. The encoded information received will appear as a small, highly condensed dot pattern on the bottom of the registration form.

DataLode’s customers, large equipment and software vendors, are able to immediately access and utilize critical customer information to more effectively acquire, retain and expand customer relationships, as well as improve customer service and exceed customer expectations.

By using INTACTA.CODE™, customers simply fill in the various fields of a registration document as part of the installation process. When completed, the information is stored in two formats: the conventional text format and as an INTACTA.CODE™ image. The registration form can then be sent by the end-user by fax or Internet connection.

Secure Import Duty Certificates -  Intertek Testing Services

Business Challenge – Many governments around the world adopt pre-shipment inspection (PSI) schemes, as a way of ensuring fiscal good governance. Shipments must be inspected, in the country of export, before they are allowed to enter the country operating the scheme. The importer is issued with an inspection certificate, which can be used to clear the shipment through Customs. The exporter is also given a certificate, which may be needed for letter of credit transactions.

Non-compliance with these regulations can mean:

  • The loss of valuable duty and tax revenue.
  • The loss of foreign exchange reserves (in countries where exchange controls exist).
  • The importation of substandard or prohibited goods.
  • The challenge is how to enforce fiscal good governance on paper-based media (certificates) without adding intrusive layers of technology and infrastructure to support enforcement.
  • Solution - Intertek Testing Services (ITS) utilizes INTACTA.CODE™ for preparing secure import duty certificates. Intertek is currently testing the use of INTACTA.CODE™ at several facilities around the world.

Using INTACTA.CODE™, the Foreign Trade Standards division of ITS can create secure electronic certificates, that can be emailed to importers and exporters.  They can be printed out on a conventional printer, but the use of INTACTA.CODE™ means that the encrypted information stored in the document cannot be changed or altered. On arrival in the destination country customs officials can easily scan the encoded, secure documents to confirm the duty payable by the importer presenting the certificate.

“INTACTA.CODE™ enables us to replace conventional paper-based certificates with holograms, with highly secure electronic alternatives,” said Rob Dilworth, Managing Director of ITS FTS.

This is a major component in our expanding e-commerce strategy,” Rob Dilworth added “All the results of our inspection and assessment of shipments can easily be encoded and filed electronically, and added to certificates.  When shipments arrive with INTACTA.CODE documents in the destination country, customs officials can be certain that the documents are authentic and unaltered.”

“We’ve investigated a number of technologies, and quite frankly, INTACTA.CODE™ was the best solution for producing simultaneous print and electronic documents in a secure format,” said Mr. Dilworth. “This will add significant value to our customers at a very reasonable cost.”

INTACTA.CODE™ printed documents are actually complex and highly reliable blocks of secure code, capable of holding far more information than traditional barcode technologies. Any Twain scanner of 300dpi or more can be used to read the documents when special password-protected INTACTA.CODE™ software is loaded on the PC.

Biometric Identification – Imagis Technologies Inc., SmartCard Technologies,Inc.

Business Challenge - Increase the amount of information that can be put on small, high performance contactless components utilizing core contactless IC chips, increase the amount of data transmitted through antennas, compliant with several varieties of 13.56Mhz general purpose contactless chips, and operate in all forms of cards, tags, and inlet components and extend security for a wide variety of security applications.

Solution - INTACTA Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:ITAC) announced today the successful integration of its INTACTA.CODE software with a biometric security application from Imagis Technologies Inc. When combined with contactless cards provided by Smart Card Technologies the three companies demonstrated a very secure and non-intrusive means of access control. The demo was featured at the CTST security show in Las Vegas, Nevada recently.

By combining facial recognition, contactless smartcards and secure encryption, the technologies provide a totally secure and totally passive solution. For example, as part of a secure facility entrance, a photo is taken as part of an employee’s security process and encoded using Imagis’ ID-2000 facial recognition, and then stored using the Intacta encryption methodology onto the specialized RFID SmartCard. When the employee subsequently walks into the building carrying the card anywhere on his person, he will pass by a reader at the entrance, which will read the ID from the SmartCard. This will trigger a video camera focused on the gate area to capture the facial image of the employee. The image will then be encoded in real-time and compared to the encoding of the individual stored in the database (or on the card). If it matches, the door will open. If not, the door will not open, and security personnel will be notified.
